It’s a new year, the time of year when people everywhere make resolutions to change. I personally love the New Year. After Thanksgiving, it’s my favorite time of year. It’s a time for the past to be put behind us and to look forward to what the new year has to bring.

One of the reasons I love the New Year is because it is when I create new goals for myself. As a homemaker I create these goals to challenge myself in the months to come.

Why Set Goals as a Homemaker?

I love setting goals and believe it is a habit that can have positive effects on an individual and their health. It is especially important for us as homemakers to create goals in our lives.

I love all of the aspects of my role as a homemaker and mother but many of the day to day tasks can be quite monotonous. It’s good for me to challenge myself by setting goals to work toward throughout the year. These goals motivate me to step outside of my normal box and better myself as a wife, mother and individual.

The Importance of Writing Down Our Goals

I believe one of the keys to making our goals a reality is writing them down. My husband and I personally carve out time at the beginning of each year to sit down and plan our goals together. We create goals around our relationship as husband and wife and for our family for the year ahead. I treasure this time together.

We have seen great results in accomplishing our goals by writing them down each year. Practically this time of goal setting might look like a coffee shop date of just an hour one evening after the kids are asleep. I challenge you to create this goal setting time with your spouse as well. Enjoy the time together collaborating and working as a team to achieve great things in your life as a family.

The secret to productive goal setting is establishing clearly defined goals, writing them down, and then focusing on them several times a day with words, pictures and emotions, as if we have already achieved them. -Denis Waitley

I also personally write down goals for myself every year. Several years ago while listening to a Dave Ramsey podcast a heard a goal setting strategy that inspired me. I’m not sure if the strategy originated with the podcast host or if he learned it from someone else but he gave several categories that he believed everyone should create goals for each year.  Ever since hearing this information I have set goals in each of the categories.

Goal Setting Planner for Homemakers

Below is a list of the categories that I create goals for each year. I began my goal making journey by just jotting my goals down in a journal or notebook that I had on hand. Since then I have created a goal setting planner for homemakers with a dedicated space for each of these categories. You can access your FREE copy below.

  • Family
  • Spiritual
  • Financial
  • Physical
  • Career
  • Social
  • Intellectual

I want to break down each of these categories and give a little more detail as to what they entail. I will also share my personal goals I have created in each of these categories for the year. By sharing my goals with the whole world (or my corner of the internet) it will keep me accountable to achieve my goals for the upcoming year.

Family Goals

This is a goal that strengthens bonds and fosters intentional connection

This type of goal could be as simple as reading a book together, having dinner together on a regular basis or cultivating a hobby your whole family can participate in. The purpose of this goal is to bring your family together and strengthen your relationship.

My personal family goal: for myself and my husband to read a parenting/marriage book together and discuss it.

I think it’s important for parents to talk about and discuss how they want to raise their children and how they can be better parents and have a more cohesive family unit.

Spiritual Goals

A goal that increases your knowledge of God’s Word and strengthens your faith

Of all of the goal categories, the spiritual is the most important. Some examples of spiritual goals might be studying scripture, spending time in prayer or sharing the gospel with others.

My personal spiritual goal: complete the study of Philippians with Grace Ambassadors and read a chapter out of Paul’s epistle’s every night.

There is a church located in Indiana that shares wonderful Biblical truth and information on their website. My husband and I have gleaned so much biblical understanding from their content. You can click the link above to check them out yourselves.

They have some great Bible studies that go through the books of the Bible verse by verse. My goal this year is to go through Philippians. Another spiritual goal I have for this year is to read one chapter in Paul’s epistle’s each day. These are the books Romans-Philemon in your Bible. If I read one chapter a day I will have read through each of these books four times each by the end of the year.

It’s a desire of my heart to be knowledgeable and grounded in God’s word, not only for myself but also for my children as well. As my children grow older and start asking questions about the Bible, I want to be sure that I have solid doctrinal answers for them.

Financial Goals

A goal to pay off debt, invest for the future or save for a purpose.

Some examples of financial goals include paying off credit cards or car loans. Setting up a retirement account or an account for your kids education. It can also include saving for a large purchase or a trip you have been wanting to go on.

My personal financial goal: to pay an additional amount toward the principal of our mortgage

We are huge fans of Dave Ramsey and the financial wisdom that he shares. Personally we don’t believe in having debt outside of our mortgage. We create a budget every month and we stick to it.

While living in our previous home we worked very hard following the Ramsey principles and paid off our mortgage within 5 years. Achieving this goal is what set us up financially to be in the home we are in now.

We took out a modest size mortgage on our current home. Because we know the freedom of not having a mortgage payment we are extremely determined to put whatever extra we can toward the principal of our current mortgage and pay it off as quickly as possible as well. We have a set number in mind that we would like to pay off this year. I believe it’s important to make your goals specific.

Physical Goals

A goal that involves bettering your physical health.

From exercising, to flossing your teeth regularly to drinking enough water each day. The types of goals you can create around the physical category are endless.

My personal physical goal: to do 15 minutes of physical activity everyday. This might be a walk, yoga or a workout video.

I know this goal might seem too simple, like 15 mins, really? This goal for me is more about me creating a consistent habit rather than me trying to create a really intense workout routine.

I personally love being active but oftentimes this window of time in my day gets lost in the every day activities of being a homemaker. My goal is to carve this time back out and make sure I am taking 15 minutes each day to improve my physical health but also my mental health as well.

Career Goals

A goal to advance skills, experience or professional growth.

This could be a goal around your existing career or a career that you would like to see your self begin. Maybe you go back to school, gain a new certification or just increase your knowledge by reading books. All of these things count as career goals.

My personal career goal: to write two blog posts every week

I personally consider being a homemaker my full time job. You can read more about how being a homemaker is a legitimate career in my post on being a Home Economist HERE.

However, through the years I have developed little side hustles that I enjoy and that can work within the parameters of managing my home. This blog happens to be one of them and my goal this year is to make sure I am putting out quality content weekly that my readers can enjoy and benefit from.

Social Goals

A goal to improve relationships, communication or community engagement.

Don’t make this goal harder than it needs to be. It could be as simple as planning a dinner with a friend you haven’t seen in a while or starting a non profit within your community. The goal is to improve relationships.

My personal social goal: start having a weekly walk / meet-up with a friend of mine

This is the hardest type of goal for me to create. I am a very strong introvert so any type of goal that requires me to be social on a regular basis is one that I would rather not create.

I made this goal achievable by making it with a friend I already have. If I had to make a new friend it would be game over. However it is still challenging because it requires me to plan a social meetup with them weekly.

Intellectual Goals

A goal focused on expanding knowledge and life long learning.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to this category. You can literally pick any topic you are interested in and make it your goal to expand your knowledge in that area. This year my goal has to do with learning more about my heritage.

My personal intellectual goal: read as much as I can about Japan. This can include biographies, novels and non fiction books.

My grandmother on my mom’s side is Japanese. I am blessed to still have her with me on this earth but I know that the time is short. Learning all that I can about her home country and people while having as many conversations with her as I can is an important goal. I want to one day pass her knowledge and stories down to my children.
