Read more to discover the benefits of Apis Mellifica for swelling and stings.

Allergic reactions seem to be more and more common in our generation. I often hear of children having reactions to a variety of foods, fragrances or flying insects. As a mama, we want to be prepared in the event of an allergic reaction.
Everyone needs a medicine in their medicine cabinet that helps to reduce swelling and calm allergic reactions. The most common known medicines to help with these types of symptoms are allopathic medicines such as Benadryl. I am not condemning anyone for having Benadryl in their medicine cabinet in the case of an emergency but we must be aware that these types of medicines do have numerous amounts of side effects.
What if I told you there is another safe and effective alternative, with no side effects? Wouldn’t you want to make sure you knew about it? In this article we are going to talk about that alternative.
Homeopathy Basics
If you are new to homeopathy I encourage you to read my article introducing you to the Basic Principles of Homeopathy. Since discovering homeopathy, I have never felt more confident as a wife and mother in caring for my family.
What is Apis Mellifica
Apis Mellifica is a homeopathic medicine made from the western or European honeybee. To prepare this medicine a honey bee is crushed and taken through the process of preparing a homeopathic medicine. The raw form of a honey bee is transformed into a homeopathic medicine that no longer possesses the venom of the bee but rather it’s curative power.
The History of Apis Mellifica
The remedy Apis was first introduced into the medical world of homeopathy in 1847. The story goes that a doctor had a patient who had severely swollen kidneys. The patient was prescribed dried and powdered honeybees. This remedy however, wasn’t prescribed by a doctor but rather by a local Native American, medicine woman. When the doctor witnessed that his patient was cured by this alternative treatment, the medicine was introduced as a homeopathic remedy.
What Are the Benefits of Apis?
Today, Apis is one of the most well known and commonly used homeopathic remedies. Just as a bee sting causes pain and swelling, the homeopathic remedy made from this small creature is able to alleviate those same types of symptoms.
Below is a list of some of the top symptoms that Apis can help with. When trying to determine the correct remedy for your situation, choose a remedy based on which one most closely matches your specific presenting symptoms.
- Extreme swelling

Some common ailments that usually present with the above mentioned types of symptoms include.
- Allergies
- Insect Stings
- Hives

- Allergic Reactions
With all of these ailments, you will notice that they often present many of the symptoms mentioned above such as stinging, swelling, and a sensation of heat on the skin. A good indication that Apis is the correct remedy of choice is if the sufferer’s symptoms are relieved by cold application and made worse by heat.
How I Have Personally Used this Remedy
I have personally used Apis in caring for my family by administering it to my son after he was bit by mosquitos. When he was younger his body greatly over reacted when he got mosquito bites. His symptoms included swelling and tight red skin. His arm looked as if a bee had stung him. The remedy, Apis would help reduce the swelling and return his arm to a more normal appearance.
I have heard other testimonials from others who have used Apis to help with food allergy reactions with great success. On my podcast episode I interviewed Cathi Diaz who works with American’s for Homeopathy Choice. She shared an amazing story of how Apis has greatly helped her granddaughter who suffers from life threatening food allergies. You can listen to her story, HERE.
Does Apis Interact With Conventional Medicine?
Allergic reactions can sometimes be serious or life threatening situations. It is important for individuals that suffer from life threatening allergic reactions to have the necessary medicines on hand such as an EpiPin.
Homeopathy does not interact with conventional medicine. You can give homeopathic medicine alongside conventional medication if necessary. It is a gentle and effective form of medicine that works in the body without side effects or interaction with other medications.
