Step by step instructions to make a deliciously easy, honey-sweetened pie crust from scratch. A recipe your whole family will love.

There is something so satisfying when you take a bite of a homemade pie, especially one prepared with a made from scratch crust. No matter the flavor of pie, that buttery taste and flaky texture of the crust is what makes a pie a pie in my opinion.
The History of Pie Crusts
Pies have been around for thousands of years. Historians date pie crusts being made all the way back to the Egyptians of 9500 BC. During this time pie crusts were made with grains like barley, wheat or oats. Often the types of fillings put into these crusts were more savory in nature.
Is a Homemade Crust Difficult to Make
Making a pie crust from scratch is actually extremely simple. This recipe uses only four simple ingredients that most people keep readily stocked in their kitchen panty. Not only is this pie crust easy to make but the flavor of homemade crust is exceptionally better than store bought.
Is it Better to Use Butter or Lard?
While you can use either of these options to make a delicious pie crust, butter will always be my go to pie crust ingredient. Butter provides a delicious flavor and is also a wonderful, healthy fat for us to consume. Lard is a great option as well. It provides a slightly flakier texture, so the choice between the two is really just personal preference.
Should You Refrigerate Pie Dough Before Using?
While this recipe can be mixed and prepared immediately for baking you can also choose to refrigerate your dough for later. Dough can be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored in the fridge overnight to be baked the next day.
How Many Crusts Does This Recipe Make
This recipe makes one pie crust which is perfect for open pies. However you can double the recipe if you are wanting a crust on top of your pie, such as a lattice topping.
How to Use a Honey-Sweetened Pie Crust
This pie recipe can be baked ahead and used in a recipe that calls for a pre-baked crust or it can be baked at the same time as the filling. If you need to pre-bake the pie crust for your recipe of choice, be sure to dock the pie crust before baking.
What is Docking the Pie Crust?
Docking the pie crust means taking a fork and poking holes in the bottom of the crust before baking. Doing this allows the pie crust to release steam while baking and not lose it’s shape.
