I will never forget reading a post from my midwives, after having my first child, sharing about the importance of hydration. The post shared the benefits of drinking water and staying hydrated as a means to help anxiety and depression as a postpartum mom.
After reading that post I began taking my hydration as a mom more seriously. I knew that staying hydrated was vital for my physical and emotional health. I have had two more children since reading my midwives post and I have realized that staying hydrated and drinking enough water as a busy SAHM is more challenging that I originally thought.
The tasks of a busy SAHM are endless. There is laundry, dishes, diaper changes and everything in between. Remembering to take care of ourselves by drinking enough water throughout the day can easily get lost as we care for everyone else. Below I will share my top five tips on staying well hydrated as a busy SAHM.
Health Benefits of Proper Hydration
There are so many health benefits that come from being properly hydrated. The body is composed mostly of water so it makes sense that a constant intake of water is needed in order for it to function properly. Here is a short list of some of the positive effects that proper hydration has on our bodies.
- Boosts Energy Levels
- Aids in Digestion
- Improves Brain Function
- Helps with Weight Management
- Supports Kidney Function
How Much Water Should I Drink a Day
The amount of water a person should drink daily varies based on age, sex and a variety of other factors. Some sources recommend half of your body weight in ounces. The Institute of Medicine suggests that a woman should drink right over 90 ounces of water a day to stay properly hyrdrated.
5 Hydration Tips for the Busy SAHM
1. Get the Right Water Bottle
There are a lot of great water bottles out there but the important thing is to get one that you personally love. People typically have a cabinet full of water bottles that they don’t use for one reason or another. They might be hard to fill up, don’t fit in the cup holder in the car or don’t have a handle for easy transport. So tip number one, is get a water bottle that you enjoy drinking out of.
For years I just had random water bottles and always found myself not drinking enough water. After my third child was born I got tired of my water not being cold, especially at night after a nursing session. I invested in a Yeti and I LOVE it! It is the perfect size, my drinks stay cold for hours and most importantly it has a straw!
I don’t know about you but I definitely drink more water when my water bottle has a straw. Yes, it might be a little more challenging to clean but it is worth it because I stay hydrated and feeling my best throughout the day.

2. Drink a Full Glass of Water After Waking Up
The best way to get those water ounces in for the day is to start as soon as you wake up. My goal has been to drink a full glass of water as soon as I enter the kitchen to begin making breakfast. This first 8oz of the day is a great head start toward reaching my 90 oz goal.
Drinking a glass of water upon waking is a healthy habit to form. While sleeping during the night your body becomes slightly dehydrated. Drinking water first thing in the morning re-hydrates your body as well as flushes out toxins that have accumulated over night.
After drinking my glass of water upon waking I also go ahead and fill up my water bottle for the day. As a busy SAHM having my water bottle full in the morning is one less thing I have to worry about later in the day when kids, meal prep and chores take priority.
3. Filter & Infuse Your Water
No one wants to drink water if it doesn’t taste good. In our first home we lived near town and we had city water. The thoughts of having to drink 90 oz of chlorine flavored water was not appealing to me at all. During this time we invested in a water filter.
Filtering your water can have many benefits. Depending on the quality of your filter it can remove bacteria, metals and chemicals from your water. Having water that tastes pure, clean and delicious will definitely help you in reaching your goal of drinking more water and staying hydrated throughout the day.
If plain tasting water just doesn’t cut it for you, consider spicing your water up a little. I personally love to add organic lemon juice to my water bottle to give it a little flavor. The lemon juice is great for detoxing the body as well. Here is a list of some other fruits/veggies you can add to your water for extra flavor and health benefits.
- Lime Juice or any Citrus Juice
- Berries (Strawberries, Raspberries, Blueberries)
- Cucumbers – one of my favorites
- Mint Leaves
- Ginger
4. Associate Hydrating With an Everyday Task
A lot of people suggest setting reminders on your phone to help you remember to stay hydrated. This may work for some but as a busy SAHM this just didn’t work for me. Inevitably my reminder on my phone would go off and I wouldn’t be anywhere near my water bottle.
A trick that has worked for me is associating my water intake with tasks I do every day as a SAHM. Here is my personal example. I leave my water bottle on my kitchen counter because the kitchen is the part of house that I am in the most often.
I normally cook three meals a day for my family so I know I will be in the kitchen at least three times during the day. So for me I associate drinking my water with meal prep. When I enter the kitchen to start preparing a meal I make sure my water bottle is full and drink it throughout the meal prep.
By creating this association it is one less thing that I have to worry about remembering as a mom. If there is a task you do in your home daily I suggest pairing your water intake with that already established habit. Believe me it will make remembering to stay hydrated much easier.
5. Take Your Water with You
The more I have made getting adequate hydration a priority the more my body seems to crave it. So much so that I make sure to have my water bottle with me at all times.Nothing is worse than jumping in the car to run an errand thinking you will be fine and a mile down the road your mouth feels absolutely parched.
If you want to be sure to get an adequate amount of water intake throughout the day taking your water bottle with you is a must. When you are on the go, sitting in your car driving is the perfect time to sip on your water bottle and get more ounces in your system.
Making sure you have a water bottle that is convenient for travel is a must. See tip number one for selecting the best water bottle for you.
As a busy stay at home mom it can be a challenge to drink enough water throughout the day. I hope these tips help you in your goal to stay hydrated and energized for your family. Comment below with your favorite hydration tip!
